Hang Gliding (Excerpt) $5.00 (NMP 0075)
Allen Myers
Hang Gliding, a late intermediate piano solo, begins with the feeling of anticipation for a hang gliders flight that is about to occur. Syncopated rhythms stir up a sense of excitement for the experience that awaits. The journey through the sky begins at the center of the work when time feels suspended as the glider floats in the air. Eric Satie’s influence of measures without bar lines gives way to the performer to interpret directions in the score. Freedom in shaping phrases are interpreted through choices of dynamics and approaching rhythms as only approximations. As with unexpected gusts and changes in wind direction, so there are a variety unusual tempo markings that include Tenderly, Slight Confidence, In a Steady Manner, With Hesitation, Gaining Confidence, More Confidence along with ritardando, a tempo and accelerando. The return of the opening material reflects on the thrill of the flight and the anticipation of the next. The four page solo, an excerpt from Vignettes for Solo Piano, explores the intervals of perfect fourth and sixth and is in the key of A major.
